2nd Toastmasters speech

Smile on

Who would not desire a happy life full with achievements, great relations and good health?

There is a device that is freely accessible to us that helps us achieve all these.  The more we use the device, the stronger the device gets.  Even if you are not aware of using it, the device would automatically turns on and helps you.

Do you know what that device is??

That is the smile.

My friend Carey is a mother of 3 year old.  She says it is a torment to get up at 6 every morning in the winter to make sure her kid is ready for school.  And it is heart breaking to give up her career just for the kid’s sake.

However, all these bitterness fade away when she sees her kid’s face with the giant cheerful smile, it is a like a sunshine to her, melts her heart and gives her strength.

That is the power of a smile.

Indeed everyone knows smile is contagious, it draws people closer, makes you look younger, and sometimes can navigate you from difficult social situation and even ease away the tension of embarrassing moments.  That is why politicians smile so often in front of the camera like our famous Anson Chan and US’s Obama.

Smile leads you brighter future.  Several court studies reveal that judges are likely to give lighter penalty for the smilers. This is known as the smile-leniency effect. Smile softens even the hardest criminals.

Thus, smile more, next time when you did something wrong, there’re reasons that your boss have to have mercy on you.

Research at the University of California was done with group of ladies being taken photos of.  Ladies who showed genuine smiles had greater chance to get marry by age of 27, and therafter they had more stable relations, better physical and emotional health.

Smile boosts our immune system and triggers positive emotions that are equivalent to satisfaction and contentment. A study tells us even if you fake the smile i.e. just simply pull tips of the mouths and relax your forehead, the movement of these muscles would trigger the brain to release endorphin, the body’s natural painkiller. Thus, smile is a natural drug.

The British Dental Health Foundation also did a research that reveals when a group of participants were shown pictures of smiling people, their brain and heart activities was equal to the group that had chocolate bars, but 2000 times more powerful.  So, before you give out chocolates to your girlfriend, you may consider smiling at her instead.

There are millions of reasons to smile.  To summaries, there is a quote from the book “How to win friends and influence people”,

“Smile costs nothing, but creates much.  It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.  It happens in a flash but the memory of it lasts forever.”

So, smile on.

1st Speech in Toastmasters

The lifechanging question

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Tonight I’m going to tell you how I raised the most important question in life, the very question that turned my life upside down.  This very important question could be yours to ask tonight.

Back in a decade ago, when I was an university student, around me there were lots of Christians.  They were my friends but to me they were somehow bizarre, as they always sought help from the so called “super-nature” God no matter what happened.

I always reckoned that these believers were a butch of lazy, low EQ creatures who were too weak to confront any challenges they faced.  So to me at that point, believers of Christ were a group of dependent failures.

I did not change my view to them until the interview with my 1st employer.  During the interview, there sat a sophisticated lady in her 50s asked me surprisingly personal questions like “Do you have any religion?”  “Does your family have the tradition of worshipping Buddha?”  As a humble fresh gradate, I would answer any question that the interviewer throw at me.  So, I honestly told her that I didn't have any religion.

After the interview, I received the employment offer from her.  During the time with her, I was amazed by her ability, exposures and her social circles.  She opened my eyes, people around her were the knowledgeable professions like judges, lawyers, accountants, doctors, business men and even tycoons who were with very high influential power to the society.  Yet these powerful people were Christian and willing to humble themselves in front of the so called the Almighty God, Jesus Christ.

This really hit me, because I always thought Christians were the weak creatures with no brain.

In one afternoon, my boss shared her heart with me, she said to me that she had gone through lots of things in life, as a typical Hong Kong person, she always calculated and measured the cost and benefit for any decision she made, she only did things that she thought was the best.

But eventually after 40 years of hard effort, the ultimate rewards she received did not bring her any happiness or satisfaction.

She said to me “why don't you seize your days in your early 20s and select the best for your life now, that is to walk with God, to open your heart and have a relation with him, God will direct you to the best, you don’t need to waste the effort like me, in walking in circles and seeking things that won’t ultimately bring any good to your life.”

In considering her sincerity and social circle she was with, I whispered to myself, “hey there’s nothing to loss, if the God she mentioned is true then I would receive all the benefits, but if not, I just turn away and do whatever I used to and loss nothing.

So I made the bet, and asked God the very important question, "if you really are the almighty god who loves me, let me experience you and I’ll make a relation with you."

Once this bet is made, God turned my life in 180 degree.  He let me experienced his existence and love.  He is involved in my life even in the littlest thing.  He taught me that relationship was built by love not mutual exploitation.  He led me solidly experience and know humans were the composition of body, spirit and soul.

From that conversation with God onwards and until today I still know I am graciously led by Jesus.  No matter what happen in my life, he is still walking along with me, blessing me.

So I dare you tonight, don’t miss out the good thing, begin the conversation, ask God question, then you will see his existence and his love. Yes, Jesus is waiting for you and longing to build a relation with you.

As the bible says in Mathew 7:7-8, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Thank you.
